I continue to be surprised by the amount of processed junk food that people eat. Part of the problem is that people are conditioned to believe that they “deserve” a cheat meal or that a balanced diet means eating some “bad foods”. The words “clean eating”, “good foods”, “wellness” are all on the banned list. This overzealous banning of talk about “healthy eating” has led to beliefs that it is ok to eat junk food, some of the time. Or that it is ok to treat yourself with unhealthy foods.
Can I just clear something up? There is nothing wrong with eating a clean diet, free of toxins, pesticides and processed food. There is nothing wrong with avoiding alcohol, refined sugars and fast food. You are not ‘obsessed’ because you choose to eat healthy foods all of the time. In fact, there is something quite depressing about a society that normalises junk food as being part of ‘balance’. “Everything in moderation” has probably become the biggest excuse for an unhealthy lifestyle.
As a nutrition coach, yoga teacher and healer, my preferred approach is to encourage clients to form healthy habits for life. These habits should be rock solid and not something we can pick or choose to do at will or when the mood strikes. We need to gives ourselves no out from a healthy lifestyle, no option to choose foods that are not healthy. How do I motivate people to do this? It is through the enjoyment and love of food as sacred. We must honour our bodies and what we put into them. After all, our bodies are the vehicle for our spirit and soul. We want a beautiful, sleek and fast vehicle! This is not about appearance, but it is about health.
Health is more than fitness. It is holistic health from all angles. Mind, body, spirit and soul. If we aren’t healthy in any of those areas, it will impact the whole system and our whole life. Physical symptoms often having accompanying emotional reactions and vice versa. Any imbalance in one area will show up in all areas.
This is why we must eat to feed our bodies, minds, spirit and souls. Healthy, unprocessed and nourishing foods for every meal and snack will promote optimum health at all levels. This do not mean boring or bland. In fact, healthy eating is actually delicious and often decadent, once you learn how to create amazing foods for yourself.
Here is my list of foods that I eat every day. It isn’t an exhaustive list, just some ideas to get you started with easy to find, every day foods that taste great and feed your whole energetic system.
