“If you want results, you need to work” says Brett Dommersnes, Trainer at Revolution Health Clubs.
Recently, Brett wrote a fantastic piece on the reasons why you might be getting average results. He shared some hard and fast truths that cut through the excuses we often make for ourselves. We liked his approach so much, that we asked to share it with all of you.
Four Reasons Why You Might Be Getting Average Results

Not getting the results you’re after is one of the most soul crushing things about getting into your health and fitness. You get excited to begin with as when you first start you see big changes. This is because you’ve gone from doing nothing at all to some form of activity and this will naturally create change.
The problem then becomes, what happens once you achieved all you can achieve from this initial change?
This answer is unfortunately, more change is needed.
Some factors that may be impacting your progress are explained below.
NUTRITIONAL HABITS & DIET
This tends to be a problem area as most fitness goals are based on weight loss and your diet is a very important factor. This means ensuring you are eating a diet filled with a good variety of vitamins and minerals. More importantly for body composition goals, you need to make sure that your caloric needs are in line with your goals too. This means being in a calorie DEFICIT for weight loss and a calorie SURPLUS if you want to gain weight.
RECOVERY & SLEEP
Your body is a very complex machine. For that machine to function properly and not break down, it needs rest, sleep is that rest. Training takes a toll on your body and when you exercise you then need time for the muscle and energy stores to repair and replenish. Constantly depriving your body of sleep will result in suboptimal recovery AND performance, reducing the potential for results.
PRIORITIES & LIFE CHOICES
This one is tough for most and it takes ownership and accountability. Decisions you make in life either going to take you closer or further away from your goals. Now there is nothing wrong with choosing a night out drinking with friends or a nice meal but you have to realise and accept that making these choices will not help you achieve the results you may be after. If your health and fitness is important to you, it needs to be prioritised as such. Your results are a reflection of the choices you make.
TRAINING & INTENSITY
How you train and how hard you train makes a huge difference in what results you can achieve. Going to the gym and not giving it your all every workout will not help you progress. If you want results, you need to work.
