There are times in life when inspiration is needed to connect with our strength and get through tough times. At The Headspace and Bass Movement, we love to share stories of people who work hard to maintain a positive and determined outlook in life, even when facing challenges. After all, positivity has a ripple effect and inspires us all to aim high.
With that in mind, who better for us to interview than Ik Agu (I-Kay), actor, singer, songwriter and passionate believer in positivity. In addition to his many acting, singing and songwriting credits, I-Kay wrote the lyrics for the Danny Byrd and Maduk track “Better Life”, a stand out as one of 2018’s most feel good songs.
We asked I-Kay how he stays strong during tough times, what inspired the lyrics for “Better Life” and about his gym, fitness and boxing regime. His answers provide insight into how he digs deep, maintains a strong mindset and uses songwriting to share messages of hope and encouragement.
1. You have recently said “tough times will come, there’s no running away from that, but the real strength is in being consistent with your positivity even though you don’t feel like it.” What tools do you use to stay positive in life and in your career when the tough times come?
The tools I use in life when times are tough, are reminding myself of the things I have been through before and that the situation now is gonna pass like the rest and that I can do this. I also remind myself that it could always be worse too and I remember individuals that inspire me in life and career and see how they made it through their tough times. A lot of positive reinforcement in times like this are used by myself. I also pray a lot also, seek help from friends, family or experts like counsellors and use books, or other useful materials to try to better equip myself. Going to the gym is also a great place for me to go to release stress when times get difficult.
2. You are a featured artist on the Danny Byrd and Maduk track “Better Life”, one of 2018’s most uplifting and inspiring tracks. What was the inspiration behind your lyrics?
It’s always great to collaborate with Danny Byrd and to be featured on the ‘Better Life’ track was of no exception. The inspiration behind the lyrics came from acknowledging that a friend was in a great place in their life, (‘I feel your flame and fire’) the energy surrounding them was very positive, and also encouraging them to continue be the best they can be (“aim for a better life”). It’s also all about uplifting one’s positive outlook and perspective.
3. Working out at the gym and boxing training seems to be a big feature in your daily routine, how has your mindset changed since you incorporated these activities into your lifestyle?
I’ve been going to the gym for over 15 years and boxing for 5. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work out in the gym and to learn the art of boxing because I’ve learnt a lot about having a disciplined mindset, having fun, hard work, dealing with failure, the value and importance of consistency, social interactions and many other lessons. I’m still learning new things and have applied all that I’ve learnt and still learning to different areas of both my personal and professional life.
4. BONUS QUESTION: Is there anything else you would like to share on building and maintaining a strong mind and staying positive in life?
The last thing I’d like to add is an important quote by the late MAYA ANGELOU “Nothing will work unless you do”
This is a positive quote that reminds me to stay healthy in both mind and body, which affects everything else around me.
